In March of 1910 a group of aviators arrived in Portland Oregon to demonstrate to the public the art of flying. They had recently appeared in LA in January which was the first Airshow ever in the continental United States. This group was spear headed by Glen Curtis who the year before had won the international airshow in Rhiems France.
Upon arriving in Portland they began to demonstrate the famous Rhiems racer and a smaller Curtis airplane. This exhibit was held at the present Rose City golf course. In 1910 it was a race track.
This blog will take you on a journey to build a half scale replica of this famous aircraft.
It is my goal to build this out of steel tubing and errect it on the slope of my land over looking the 16th green at rose city. A plaque will accompany it detailing the events of 1910.
Today i began construction of the mock of the large scale model.
The mock up is made out of steel brake tubing and is held together by silver brazing.Today i finished 2 wings of this plane . I used a jig to keep the tubes at the correct angle.
